Inspect and troubleshoot runs

Follow the data through a workflow to find the first failing step.

IN THIS LESSON

  • Distinguish a saved workflow from an execution.
  • Use node inputs and outputs to diagnose a problem.

A run is a record of what happened

Editing a workflow changes its definition. Running it creates an execution. When the result is unexpected, inspect the execution instead of assuming the current editor shows exactly what ran.

Work from the first unexpected result

  1. Find the execution and its status.
  2. Identify the first node that failed or returned unexpected data.
  3. Check its input, selected credentials, and configuration.
  4. Compare its output with what the next node expects.
  5. Retest with a small input after correcting the issue.

A missing downstream output can mean that the path was not selected. It does not always mean that node failed.

Before running again

A workflow can create real side effects, such as sending a message or adding a record. Inspect which actions already completed before repeating the entire run.

Try it

Remove a required value from a test workflow. Run it, locate the failure, restore the value, and verify a new execution succeeds.
